About Tenafly
Discovered in 1609 by Henry Hudson, Tenafly was incorporated in 1894. The town is mainly a residential community populated by many Victorian and Gothic homes built in the mid-1800s. The Highwood Park Historic District contains the centerpiece Gothic home of New York architect Daniel Topping Atwood. The 1874 Tenafly Railroad Depot is another example of Atwood's notable Gothic design, made of sandstone and complete with a cupola and intricate woodworking.
Tenafly counts Elizabeth Cady Stanton among its past residents; she was a pioneer in women's suffrage who lived here 1868-1887. Big band leader Glenn Miller also called the town home and was a resident in 1944 when his plane disappeared over the English Channel.
