About Plainfield
At the south end of the Watchung Mountains, Plainfield has become one of the many suburbs that radiate from the Elizabeth and Newark metropolitan areas. A few reminders of the Revolutionary period remain.
While planning the Battle for the Watchungs, Gen. George Washington often stayed at the Plainfield home of a friend, the Rev. Nathaniel Drake; the 1746 house is headquarters for the local historical society. Another 18th-century building still in use is the 1788 Friends Meeting House on Dover-Chester Road; phone (973) 361-9427.
