About Lakehurst
Surrounded by fish and wildlife management areas, Lakehurst is best known for its role in aviation history. The community served as the American terminal for the huge, transatlantic lighter-than-air craft during the 1920s and 1930s. The Naval Air Engineering Station at Lakehurst was a landing site for the German airship Hindenburg, which caught fire and crashed to the field in 1937, resulting in the loss of 36 lives. The event is commemorated by a small monument on the grounds.
