About Freehold

The Battle of Monmouth occurred in Freehold on June 28, 1778, when Gen. George Washington's army overtook Sir Henry Clinton's army as it retreated from Philadelphia. During this battle Molly Pitcher—so called because she brought water to the battlefield for the soldiers—helped to keep her husband's cannon in action when he was overcome by the 100-degree heat.

Just before the battle, Clinton used the house of a local farmer as his headquarters. Covenhoven House, 150 W. Main St., dates from the early 1750s and contains period furnishings. The house is open May through September; phone (732) 462-1466.

Outdoor recreation is available at nearby Turkey Swamp County Park. Camping is available mid-March through November 30, while boat rentals are offered only in the summer; phone (732) 462-7286.

Entertainment includes harness racing at the Freehold Raceway, US 9 and SR 33, during most of the year; phone (732) 462-3800.
