About East Rutheford
In 1971 the New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority was created by the state legislature to build a major sports complex south of Hackensack. Some 750 acres of tidal marsh were drained to create the Meadowlands Sports Complex, which includes Giants Stadium, home of the Giants and Jets of the National Football League and the MetroStars of Major League Soccer; Continental Airlines Arena, home for the National Basketball Association's New Jersey Nets and the National Hockey League's New Jersey Devils; and Meadowlands Racetrack, which features both thoroughbred and harness racing.
Note: Policies concerning admittance of children to pari-mutuel betting facilities vary. Phone for information.
Guided tours of the complex, at the intersection of exit 16W of the New Jersey Turnpike and SR 3, are offered by appointment; phone (201) 460-4038 for tour reservations, (201) 935-8500 for general information, (201) 935-3900 for the arena/stadium box office, or (201) 843-2446 for the racetrack.
