Once a haunt for pirates and whalers, the island city of Brigantine may have been named for one of the first shipwrecks on its treacherous shoals. More than 300 vessels are said to have gone down off the Brigantine coast since the early 1700s. The lighthouse at the center of town was built not to warn ships away, but to attract customers; a real estate company erected it as a sales office in 1926. The 20,000-acre Brigantine Unit of the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge lies 3 miles northwest.
