More than 10,000 years ago most of the area to the east was part of Lake Passaic, created when the terminal accumulation of earth and stone carried by the Wisconsin Glacier blocked the Passaic River. The remaining portion of the former lake—now a wetland—is known as the “Great Swamp” of New Jersey.
